DAVENPORT, Iowa (CNN) – A minister delivering the invocation at John McCain’s rally in Davenport, Iowa Saturday told the crowd non-Christian religions around the world were praying for Barack Obama to win the U.S. presidential election.

“There are millions of people around this world praying to their god—whether it’s Hindu, Buddha, Allah—that his opponent wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they’re going to think that their God is bigger than you, if that happens,” said Arnold Conrad, the former pastor of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Davenport.

The remark was made before McCain arrived at the rally but the Republican nominee’s campaign quickly put out a statement distancing itself from the remarks.

“While we understand the important role that faith plays in informing the votes of Iowans, questions about the religious background of the candidates only serve to distract from the real questions in this race about Barack Obama’s judgment, policies and readiness to lead as commander in chief,” said McCain campaign spokesperson Wendy Riemann.

This incident comes a day after a Minnesota voter asked Senator McCain if Barack Obama was an Arab at a town hall in Lakeville, Minnesota and just three days after Lehigh GOP County Chairman Bill Platt made a speech at a McCain rally in Pennsylvania where he refered to the Democrat nominee for president as Barack Hussein Obama.

McCain took the microphone from her and said (paraphrase), “No, he’s a decent family man citizen who I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues…he’s not… thank you”

And, the crowd booed McCain. McCain’s supporters booed him.

And, later, “He is a decent person and a person who you don’t have to be scared as President of the United States.”

And, more booing!

So, let’s get this straight. Palin as the McCain surrogate stirs up the racism…stirs up the idea that somehow Obama’s not a real American…how he’s not an American like us…how he has “terrorist associations” and, when their supporters internalize the germ of the message that they’re putting out there…McCain backs away from it.

But, he had to. Because, at root, McCain just isn’t corrupt enough to see the plan through to its conclusion. I’m not going to tell you that McCain is a great guy…but, he’s not corrupt enough to follow through with the evil scheme.

McCain created a monster that’s raging beyond his control…and, he doesn’t like the looks of the monster.

Fascinating. I’m happy to be alive and witnessing this history.

Now, let’s forget for a sec about how Senator Biden is certainly not a good candidate for fathers and about how, from all early appearances, Senator Obama doesn’t appear like he’s going to be much better.

Let’s just get down to the most basic level. Last night two men got together and a lot of people watched. They got together in America. A land where, not terribly long ago, men who looked like Senator McCain physically owned men who looked like Senator Obama. And, a land where currently the Republican party (largely through Sarah Palin following her orders) is attempting to cast Obama as “the other,” unpatriotic, and, even an Islamic terrorist!

I only wish that I were making this up. So, given the context of history and the current political reality, when you don’t look at your opponent and gesture a finger as you’re calling him “that one”…well, yes, that does cause pause. You refer to objects and things as “that one.” Interesting to note that for a very long time in America black folks were thought of as objects, animals, or, let’s just say…less-than-human.

It is reasonable to be troubled by McCain’s treatment of Senator Obama. The “that one” remark simply encapsulates and stays true to the whole, disturbing larger context.
